Character Name: Shirou Fubuki
Series: Inazuma Eleven
Canon Point: Episode 44, before the game against Gaia
Summary/History: Here is his wiki page, but it’s pretty inadequate. I’ve written up a more detailed history for up to his canonpoint.
Shirou had a normal, happy family in Hokkaido: his parents and a slightly-younger twin brother named Atsuya. Both he and Atsuya played soccer. Even at a very young age, they were both extremely talented. Both were quick, and Shirou's defensive skill coupled miraculously with Atsuya's unstoppable shoots. Their parents were extremely supportive.
All of that changed around age eight. They were on the way back from one of the boys' soccer games, and the twins were arguing over whether offense or defense was more important to winning a game. Their father said, since both are so necessary, it means as long as both twins were together, they were perfect. That statement greatly affected Shirou, because in the next moment an avalanche came crashing down the mountain toward their car. Atsuya managed to push Shirou out of the car just in time, making him the only survivor. He probably sat there, injured and alone on the frozen mountainside, for some time before he was found.
Fubuki then grew up alone. He continued to play soccer, despite his intense loneliness. After a year or two, a change in him came about: he developed an alternate personality based on Atsuya, and began playing a distinctive style of soccer in which he'd play defense, then switch to forward when he got the ball. He began adding a number of other sports to his hobbies, including skiing and snowboarding, and became so skilled he developed a minor legendary status. At some point he killed at least one bear.
At age fourteen, Raimon's Inazuma Caravan came to Hokkaido to recruit him for their battle against Aliea Academy, a group of aliens threatening Earth who claimed they would only stop when bested in soccer. As a famous forward, the caravan needed Fubuki to replace their ace striker Gouenji, who had just left the team. He accepted easily, joining the team just in time for Aliea Academy's first team Gemini Storm to attack his school. They defeated the aliens easily with Fubuki's help. The next team of aliens, Epsilon, showed up promptly to exile Gemini Storm. The struggle against the aliens continued.
The other forward, Someoka, resented Fubuki joining the team, believing strongly that Raimon’s only ace striker should be Gouenji and that they should wait for his return. He became the team's new ace striker when Fubuki missed a goal in their contest due to a squirrel in his line of fire. Fubuki didn't fight the decision, but accepted it. In time he and Someoka became fast friends.
Aliens weren't the only enemies the Inazuma Caravan had to deal with. Kageyama, who had previously attempted to kill and seriously injure the entire Raimon team, escaped from jail and started a school team known as Shin Teikoku. Kidou, the former captain of the Teikoku team and a former pawn of Kageyama, was understandably pissed - especially upon learning that two of his friends and former teammates had been brainwashed into joining this team. They even went so far as to use dangerous forbidden hissatsu techniques, and the Inazuma Caravan had to stop them. Together, Someoka and Fubuki were able to develop a shoot that could get past their incredible defense and lead the team to victory, but not before one Shin Teikoku player deliberately injured Someoka's shin in order to hinder the Raimon offense.
The two of them continued practicing this combination shoot, with Someoka concealing his injury, until they'd perfected it. However, this made the damage to his leg worse, and he eventually collapsed during practice. He was deemed incapable of playing and hospitalized in Raimon Town. He passed the title of ace striker on to Fubuki, and the team continued to travel Japan recruiting players.
Fubuki became the only forward capable of scoring against Epsilon, and because he had to be ‘Atsuya’ in order to score, this unbalanced his mental state. He began to train intensely, with ‘Atsuya’ taking control more often. During a game against Epsilon in Osaka, his Eternal Blizzard shoot became strong enough to be on par with Epsilon’s goalkeeper Desarm's defense, though he was still unable to break through. They tied. Fubuki's skill excited Desarm, who began to see him as a worthy rival, but this imperfection affected Fubuki badly.
‘Shirou’ began to disappear into ‘Atsuya’, in no small part due to the team's reliance on him. He became scared, and struggled against ‘Atsuya’ for control to prove ‘Shirou’ could shoot, too. His performance suffered. He kept both his background and his internal struggle a secret as the team continued to travel. In Fukuoka, team captain Endou's friend Hiroto offered a practice match between the Inazuma Caravan and his own team the next day.
Personality: Fubuki is, on the surface, very calm and mellow. He's kind and polite, making him very princely - enough to be called the prince of the snowfields. Almost any time he goes anywhere, instantly a few girls will show up to help him (and probably try to get him on a date). He's quite good at getting information through his sweet face and soothing demeanor. He's a little bit of an enigma because he doesn't talk about himself very much, but he won't especially avoid it if he's directly asked. He's also somewhat shy and timid, preferring to let others control social interaction.
Despite his calm and his easygoing attitude, though, Fubuki is an extremely troubled young man. The avalanche that killed his family had a profound effect on him. Spending enough time around him will reveal he goes into fits of terror at any reminder, be it snow sliding off a building's roof or the sound of a thunderclap. It's very likely some form of PTSD. On top of this, he has a somewhat reckless streak - it's nothing very pronounced, but his love of the outdoors (especially winter sports despite the icy tragedy in his past), that the Caravan first finds him shivering by the roadside after staying out in a blizzard for too long, and the fact he has apparently fought and killed bears all point to a drive for adrenaline and a sense of self-preservation that needs glasses. This is not to say he seeks death or danger, only that he somewhat craves the rush.
Fubuki loves sports and being active. When he isn't playing soccer (and soccer does take the majority of his time), he is skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing, or otherwise having fun in the snow. He says it's to "be like the wind" - matching both his easygoing and detached nature and his swift speed. Interestingly, this and his reckless streak appear to be among ‘Shirou's’ traits, as ‘Atsuya’ is never shown taking charge in anything but soccer. ‘Atsuya’ is shown to spare a squirrel, while ‘Shirou’ is known to kill bears.
‘Atsuya’ is Fubuki's dead twin brother. In the wake of the avalanche, Fubuki developed serious mental issues. Because his father said Shirou and Atsuya were perfect together immediately before the event, he developed something of a perfection complex. It's nothing he'll come right out and say easily, but he strives to be perfect in soccer - perfect at defending, perfect at scoring goals. There can be no in-between, for him. However, he doesn't believe ‘Shirou’ can be perfect on his own. He needs ‘Atsuya’ to be complete, to be perfect - which is part of why he developed a second personality based on his dead twin brother. ‘Shirou’ and ‘Atsuya’ could both still exist and be perfect together, even if only in Shirou's mind. ‘Shirou's’ personality is dominant most of the time, and ‘Atsuya’ mostly appears during soccer, but only when ‘Shirou’ has possession of the ball and goes on the attack.
His ‘Atsuya’ personality is aggressive, a glory-hog, and a little bit of a bully. Most of this is in relation to ‘Shirou’, as ‘Atsuya's’ limited circumstances for appearance don't give him much interaction with anyone else. ‘Atsuya’ clearly isn't opposed to sharing the striker position outright, he develops a combo shoot with Someoka, but he doesn't like sharing it with ‘Shirou’ one bit. Between that and his growing frustration over his inability to bring down Desarm, it's clear that ‘Atsuya’ dislikes rivals or anyone threatening his skills. For years, the two personalities worked well on their system. ‘Shirou’ would defend, then surrender to ‘Atsuya’ once he had possession of the ball, and ‘Atsuya’ would score the goals. It was a good balance.
The change came when the Inazuma Caravan came to Hokkaido to recruit Fubuki as a replacement for their ace striker Gouenji, who had been forced to leave the team. They were delighted to find Fubuki was equally skilled in both offense and defense, but they came specifically searching for a striker, not a defender. In other words, they came looking for ‘Atsuya’, not ‘Shirou’. After Someoka was forced to leave the team, Fubuki was the only one capable of scoring goals against the aliens at all, and they relied on him even more. ‘Atsuya’, born of Fubuki's insecurity in his own abilities as well as his memories of his brother, grew more aggressive toward the dominant personality and began to beat ‘Shirou’ down.
Fubuki has become increasingly unsure of himself. He doesn't know if he's needed or if life wouldn't simply be better for everyone if he were only ‘Atsuya’. He has begun to think he should, since the team trying to save the world came looking for a striker. The happier his friends are when he scores a goal and the more they talk about defeating Aliea Academy, the more Fubuki finds he can't say anything about his struggles. It's part of why he rarely talks about himself. He has to be perfect, so he can't afford to disappoint anyone by admitting to his mental war with himself.
Unfortunately, because he spends so much unconscious energy dividing between what is ‘Shirou’ and what is ‘Atsuya’, he severely limits himself both as a player and as a person. ‘Shirou’ only plays defense. ‘Atsuya’ only plays forward. They must switch if he wants to switch position. Because Fubuki lived his life by a pattern of ‘Shirou’ receives the ball, switches to ‘Atsuya’, then ‘Atsuya’ scores a goal, the fear of disappearing ‘Shirou’ feels when ‘Atsuya’ becomes the more important personality drives him to attempt to break his pattern. ‘Shirou’ begins attempting to score, but with ‘Atsuya's’ interference he can't even keep possession of the ball. His internal harmony is disrupted.
This limitation due to his split personality extends off the field, too. Atsuya was lively and a bit more aggressive, which means ‘Atsuya’ must be, so ‘Shirou’ becomes more toned down and yielding to compensate for the parts of himself he has defined as part of ‘Atsuya’. Shirou was always quieter and more humble, so ‘Shirou’ must remain so now, so ‘Atsuya’ becomes prouder and more hostile than Shirou's brother actually was. The division drives him to extremes, so he is incapable of actually being Fubuki Shirou. ‘Atsuya’ has begun appearing off the field to ridicule ‘Shirou’ for trying to change the pattern that’s worked for them for so long, backing the more yielding personality into a corner. The two personalities do have verbal conversations with one another when Fubuki thinks he's alone, and have a constant internal dialogue.
Fubuki hates and fears being alone, but finds it difficult to make strong connections with others because his dominant personality is far more timid and shy than he would be without ‘Atsuya’. On top of that, maintaining ‘Atsuya’ takes some of the energy he might otherwise be able to put into growing socially. Splitting his personality was the wrong solution to the loneliness born of losing his family, and hinders any other solutions he might attempt. His scarf, which was once Atsuya's, is both representative of his ‘Atsuya’ personality and something of a security blanket for Fubuki. As long as he has it, he doesn't feel quite so alone.
It isn't fully conscious, but he has begun to realize the way he is now isn't right - however, his need to be perfect, which he defines as "being together with Atsuya", prevents him from thinking of existing any other way. He’s never been close enough to anyone else to learn to rely on people other than himself or that he can get by without his brother.
Powers/Abilities: First of all, his physical ability should be noted. Fubuki is extraordinarily fit, and he's capable of running and noting his surroundings at very high speeds. As a soccer player, his kicks could be devastating if he actually used them on people instead of soccer balls, and even using the ball as a projectile he has enough power that he should, logically, be more than capable of pulverizing anyone on the receiving end. On a similar note, he is just as unusually durable as the other players in Inazuma Eleven. Severe injuries can and do happen, but they're much rarer than one would expect given the intensity of the games. Fubuki is far from indestructible, he just has a skeleton made of shounen.
In Inazuma Eleven, most if not all soccer players use special moves called
hissatsu. These moves have dramatic effects including but not limited to the use of fire, mind control, giant extra hands, and summonable penguins. Fubuki has two main hissatsu techniques, Ice Grounds and Eternal Blizzard. Ice Grounds is a defensive move used by ‘Shirou’ that freezes the opponent solid briefly while Fubuki skates away with the ball on a road of ice. Eternal Blizzard is a shoot used by ‘Atsuya’ that lifts the ball with wind, encases it in ice, and sends it flying at the goal. Eternal Blizzard has become ludicrously powerful even by Inazuma standards due to ‘Atsuya's’ rivalry with Desarm.
Fubuki also has a combination shoot that combines the speed and icy effects of Eternal Blizzard with the raw power of Someoka's dragon-based techniques called Wyvern Blizzard. He is capable of learning more hissatsu as time goes on. Most of them involve his use of ice and snow, effectively making him a cryokinetic.
